You're far from the only one
In the DMV's own 2006 study of its knowledge tests, about half of first-time adult applicants (49.9%) passed on their first try.
The same study found that fail rates went up with each try: 50.1% on the first, 60.7% on the second and 64.6% on the third. Doing the same thing again often doesn't work. In that study, reading the handbook didn't make first-time adult applicants noticeably more likely to pass.

What to change before your next try
- Write down what caught you out while you still remember: which topics, and which kinds of question.
- Answer questions instead of rereading. Practicing with questions and reading why each wrong answer is wrong helps more than going over the handbook again.
- Check yourself on wordings you haven't seen. The real test may ask a rule in a different way from any practice test, so getting a question right after you've seen it a few times proves less than it feels.
- Go over the numbers. Distances, limits and times are easy to mix up. Each topic below has them.
