A police car is stopped on the shoulder with lights flashing. The lane next to you is clear. What does the Move Over law require?

The rule

For an emergency, tow, sanitation or utility vehicle stopped on the shoulder with flashing lights, move over a lane if you safely can. If you can't, slow below the limit and be ready to stop. A first violation can bring a fine of up to $500.

The Move Over law says to move to the next lane if you safely can. If you can't, slow down below the limit and be ready to stop.

From the Georgia Drivers' Manual, page 18. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DDS have the final word.
