Missed your expressway exit

You miss your expressway exit. What should you do?
The rule
If you get on an expressway going the wrong way or miss your exit, stay on until the next exit. Backing up on a ramp or crossing a median is dangerous.
If you miss your exit, keep going and leave at the next one. Then work out your route and get back on if you need to.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 62. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
