When it is safe to pass, how far ahead should you signal?

The rule

When it is safe to pass, signal 100 feet or more before you pass, and keep going until the whole front of the passed vehicle shows in your rearview mirror.

Once it is safe to pass, signal 100 feet or more before you pass, then steer smoothly into the passing lane.

From the SCDMV Driver's License Manual, page 7-16. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
