Your vehicle breaks down on the highway. How far behind it should you place flares?
The rule
If your vehicle breaks down, get it off the road if you can, turn on the emergency flashers, and place flares about 200 to 300 feet behind it.
Place emergency flares about 200 to 300 feet behind a disabled vehicle, so other drivers have time to change lanes.
From the SCDMV Driver's License Manual, page 9-5. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
