Florida driving skills test checklist
For your behind-the-wheel drive test. Print it, or keep it open on your phone.
Bring
- Your own vehicle, with a valid license plate and insurance. It's inspected before the test.
- No passengers: nobody else may ride along unless you need a language interpreter.

The car is refused if
- The horn, mirror, turn signals, steering, brakes, tires, brake lights or tail lights are defective or don't work.
- There's no windshield wiper on the driver's side, or no working headlights when visibility is low.
- Cracked or broken glass blocks your view, or the tag has expired.
- It has no doors, the front doors don't open from inside and out, or the seats aren't fixed in place.
- You can't give hand signals from it, it fails the bumper height rules, or it's a low-speed vehicle.

What you'll do
- Back up 50 feet slowly, looking to the rear, without the mirror or a rear-view camera.
- Keep a following distance of at least three to four seconds.
- Stop completely before the stop line or crosswalk at STOP signs, and wait at green lights until the intersection is clear.
- Yield to pedestrians, and pull over and stop for emergency vehicles.
- Park on a grade, uphill and downhill, with and without a curb, and park straight in, centered in the space.
- Signal for the last 100 feet before a turn, by hand or with your turn signals.
- Make a three-point turn in a 20 to 40 foot space, and stop quickly when the examiner asks.
- Keep both hands on the wheel, with no elbow resting in the window.
Handbook pages 20 and 21.
Under 18, before you book
- You're at least 16 and have held your learner's license for 12 months, or until you turn 18.
- No moving violation convictions in those 12 months (one is allowed if adjudication was withheld).
- A parent, guardian or responsible adult 21 or older certifies 50 hours of driving, 10 of them at night.
- A parent or guardian signs the parental consent form, and you're in compliance with school attendance.
- If you fail, the examiner explains your mistakes; a driving skills re-test costs $20 (page 15).
