Virginia road skills test checklist
For your behind-the-wheel drive test. Print it, or keep it open on your phone.
The car you bring
- You provide the vehicle. The test can't be taken in an autocycle.
- A valid safety inspection sticker, license plates, the registration card and decals.
- Working brakes, safety belts, horn, lights, turn signals, mirrors and speedometer.
Manual Section 1, page 4.
Before the test
- A driver education certificate of completion, or a behind-the-wheel checklist (DMV form CSMA 19) signed by a licensed driver who practiced with you.
- Under 18: the road skills test is given as part of your driver education course at a driving school.
- 18 or older: hold your learner's permit for 60 days first, or finish a driver education course (then the school gives the test).
- Glasses or contacts, if you need them: there's a vision screening, and you'll wear them whenever you drive.
Manual Section 1, page 4.
If it doesn't go well
- The road skills test may be taken only once per business day.
- If you fail, you wait two days before you take it again.
- After three fails at DMV, you finish the in-car part of driver education before a fourth try.
