You've stopped behind a school bus whose red lights are flashing. When may you drive on?

The rule

After stopping for a school bus, stay stopped until the bus starts moving or the bus driver or a traffic officer waves you on. Then look for children by the road and drive slowly until you're past them.

Stay stopped until the school bus starts moving, or until its driver or a traffic officer waves you on. Then watch for children and drive slowly past them.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 40. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
