You've just passed a large truck. When is it safe to move back in front of it?

The rule

Passing a big truck or bus takes longer and needs more room than passing a car. Don't stay beside it, and before you move back into its lane, be sure you can see its whole front in your mirror.

Passing a large vehicle takes more time and space than passing a car. Before you pull back in, make sure you can see the truck's whole front in your mirror.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 75. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
