How long should you drive alongside a large truck?
The rule
Don't drive alongside a large vehicle any longer than you must. When you pass one, wait until you see its whole front in your rearview mirror before you pull in front, and keep your speed.
Avoid driving next to a large truck any longer than needed. If the driver swerves or changes lanes, a collision is much more likely.
From the SCDMV Driver's License Manual, pages 10-8 to 10-9. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
