On which side should you pass a large truck?

The rule

Pass a large truck on its left side, don't drive beside it longer than you need to, and once you're past, keep moving ahead of it.

Always pass a large truck on the left. Don't ride beside it longer than you need to, and once you're past, move ahead of it.

From the California Driver Handbook, section 7, page 43. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
