At 55 mph, how much distance can a large truck need to stop?
The rule
At 55 mph a typical car can stop within about 300 feet, but a large truck may take up to 400 feet, and a loaded or faster truck takes longer. Never pull in front of a truck and then slow down suddenly.
At 55 mph, a car can stop in about 300 feet, but a large truck may need up to 400 feet. Heavier and faster trucks need even more.
From the California Driver Handbook, section 7, page 42. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
