Compared with a car, how much room does a truck, bus or RV need to stop?

The rule

Trucks, buses and RVs take close to double a car's time and distance to stop. A truck with its trailer can reach 65 feet, so passing one can need over half a mile of open road.

Trucks, buses and RVs take close to double a car's time and distance to stop. Never cut in front of one and slow down.

From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 3, page 21. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
