How does a large truck's stopping distance compare with a car's at the same speed?
The rule
At the same speed, big trucks and buses need far more distance to stop than cars; on tractor-trailers, air brake delay adds many feet. Leave plenty of room, signal turns or lane changes early, and avoid sudden moves in front of them.
Large vehicles need much more distance to stop than cars going the same speed. On tractor-trailers, the air brakes add a delay that adds many feet.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 74. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
