At 55 mph, how far does a loaded truck need to stop, at the least?
The rule
At 55 mph a loaded truck needs 335 feet or more to stop, over one and a half times what a car needs, so never cut in front of one.
A loaded truck with good tires and brakes needs at least 335 feet to stop at 55 mph. That's more than 1½ times a car's distance.
From the SCDMV Driver's License Manual, page 10-9. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
