CROSSINGRAILROAD

What must you do at this X-shaped sign?

The rule

At an X-shaped crossbuck sign (RAILROAD CROSSING) you must yield. With more than one track, the sign shows how many. If a train is close enough or fast enough to be a danger, you may not cross, even with no signals or broken signals.

An X-shaped crossbuck sign marks a railroad crossing, and you must yield. Look and listen for trains before you cross.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 61. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
