STOP

What must you do when you come to this sign?

The rule

A STOP sign is red with white letters. Come to a complete stop, give the right-of-way to vehicles and people in or approaching the intersection, then go when it is safe.

A STOP sign means a complete stop every time. Then let vehicles and pedestrians in or coming toward the intersection go first, and go only when it is safe.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 29. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
