STOP

What must you do when you come to this sign?

The rule

A STOP sign is red, eight-sided, with white letters. Come to a full stop, look every way for vehicles and people on foot, and yield.

A STOP sign always means a full stop. Once stopped, look for cars, bikes and people in every direction, and go only when it is safe.

From the SCDMV Driver's License Manual, page 6-10. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
