Your car has anti-lock brakes. How should you brake on an icy road?
The rule
On ice or snow with anti-lock brakes (ABS), keep steady, even pressure on the brake pedal. Without ABS, pump the pedal carefully, faster only as the car slows. Hard braking with regular brakes makes things worse.
With anti-lock brakes, keep your foot on the pedal with even pressure. Pumping the pedal is the method for cars without ABS.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 64. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
