Practice question · Speed and conditions

A driver is following you much too closely. What does the manual tell you to do first, if you can?

The rule

If someone follows you too closely, change lanes if you can, or slow down and pull off the road to let them pass, signaling when you leave the road and when you return. Don't brake suddenly.

If you're tailgated, move to another lane if possible. If you can't, slow down and pull over off the road so the driver can go by.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 47. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
