Your rear wheels start to skid to the left. Which way should you steer?
The rule
If your rear wheels skid, turn the steering wheel the way the vehicle is trying to go: if the rear slides left, steer left; if it slides right, steer right. You may need to steer back and forth several times.
In a rear-wheel skid, steer the way the car is trying to go. If the rear slides left, steer left; if it slides right, steer right.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 64. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
