Your car starts to skid on a wet road. What should you do first?

The rule

If you start to skid or hydroplane, take your foot off the gas, avoid the brakes if you can, and turn the front wheels the way you want to go, which means steering in the direction of the skid.

In a skid, take your foot off the gas, avoid braking, and steer the front wheels in the direction you want to go.

From the Official Florida Driver License Handbook, page 79. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
