Your car starts to skid on an icy road. What should you do first?
The rule
In a skid, ease off the gas or brake pedal, steer in the direction the car is skidding, look where you want to go, and brake only once the tires grip again.
In a skid, release the gas or brake pedal, steer the way the car is skidding and look where you want to go. Brake only after the tires grip again.
From the Maryland Driver's Manual, Section 5, page 29. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the MVA have the final word.
