Practice question · Safety and the law

An officer is talking to you at a traffic stop. Where should you keep your hands?

The rule

When an officer stops you, pull over safely, turn off the engine and radio, turn on your hazard flashers, stay in the vehicle with your hands on the wheel, and turn on the interior light at night.

Hands stay on the wheel where the officer can see them, and you remain in your vehicle unless told to step out.

From the SCDMV Driver's License Manual, pages 10-12 to 10-13. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
