Practice question · Signals and lights

A red X is lit over the lane ahead of you. What does it mean?

The rule

Lane use signals over a lane: a red X means never drive in that lane; a yellow X or yellow diagonal arrow means move out of it as soon as you safely can; a green arrow means you may drive in it.

Lane use signals show which lanes you can use at different hours. Never drive in a lane under a red X.

From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 2, page 6. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
