A sign shows a school zone speed limit is in effect. No children are in sight. What must you do?
The rule
School areas are 25 mph unless a sign says otherwise, and by law you must slow to a school zone speed limit wherever signs show it is in effect. Some school zones use photo speed enforcement.
The law requires you to slow to the school zone limit whenever signs show it is in effect, whether or not you see children.
From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 3, page 14. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
