Practice question · Speed and conditions

You're on an icy road and have to stop. How should you brake?

The rule

To stop on a slippery surface, take your foot off the accelerator and brake gently. Packed snow is like ice, and a slow, steady speed keeps you in control.

On a slippery surface, release the gas and apply the brakes gently. You have the most control when the front tires keep rolling.

From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 3, page 23. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
