You are 17 and driving. When may you use your cell phone?
The rule
If you are a minor, you may not use a cell phone or other wireless device to make or answer calls or to send or reply to texts while driving. The only exception is a call for emergency help.
Drivers under 18 may not use a cell phone or other wireless device to talk or text while driving. The only exception is a call for emergency help.
From the California Driver Handbook, section 8, page 71. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
