You can't change lanes to pass a bicyclist on a 45 mph road. How slow must you go to pass?
The rule
To pass a bicyclist, move to a lane not next to the bike if you can. If you can't, slow to at least 10 mph under the posted limit or to 25 mph, whichever is higher, and keep 3 feet away. A violation can bring a fine of up to $250.
If you can't move to a lane away from the bicyclist, slow to at least 10 mph under the limit or to 25 mph, whichever is more, and give 3 feet.
From the Georgia Drivers' Manual, page 19. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DDS have the final word.
