Who must ride with you when you drive on a learner's permit?

The rule

With a learner's permit, a licensed driver must sit in the front passenger seat beside you: at least 21, with a valid license from any state and at least one year of driving experience.

A permit driver must be with a licensed driver who is at least 21, has a year of driving experience and sits beside them.

From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 18. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
