What is the lowest fine for speeding, before the $5 surcharge?
The rule
The lowest speeding fine is $100, plus a $5 surcharge. More than 10 mph over the limit, you pay $10 more for every mph past the first 10: 73 mph in a 55 zone is a $185 fine.
The lowest speeding fine is $100, plus a $5 public safety surcharge. Going more than 10 mph over adds more.
From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 57. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
