What does a solid line along the side of the road mark?
The rule
A solid line at the side of the road shows its edge: the travel lane stops there and the shoulder starts. Driving across that edge line is illegal unless a police officer or official tells you to or a sign allows it. An edge line that angles toward the center means the road narrows ahead.
A solid line along the side of the road marks its edge: the travel lane ends there and the shoulder begins. Don't drive across it without a sign or an officer's direction.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 31. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
