Practice question · Right of way

A traffic officer's directions conflict with the traffic light. Which do you obey?

The rule

A traffic officer's directions come before signs, signals and markings: stop if signaled to at a green light, and go through a red light or STOP sign if told to. Fire police, flag persons, school crossing persons and school bus drivers may also direct traffic.

Directions from a traffic officer override signs, signals and pavement markings. If an officer waves you through a red light, go; if told to stop at a green, stop.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 33. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
