A car behind you shows a flashing blue light. What kind of vehicle is it?
The rule
Blue lights are on volunteer firefighters' own cars, green lights on volunteer ambulance or rescue members' cars, and amber lights on hazard vehicles like snowplows and tow trucks. None are authorized emergency vehicles: you don't have to yield, but should as a courtesy when safe.
Volunteer firefighters going to alarms may show blue lights on their own cars. They aren't emergency vehicles, so you need not yield, but should as a courtesy if safe.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 35. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
