An ambulance with flashing red lights and a siren comes at you in the oncoming lane of a two-way road. What do you do?

The rule

When an emergency vehicle heads toward you from any direction, safely pull over at the right side of the road and stop until it passes; if you're in an intersection, drive out of it first. This applies even when it's in the oncoming lane of a two-way road. If you hear a siren but can't tell where it is, pull over and stop until you're sure it isn't coming your way.

When an emergency vehicle heads your way from any direction, even in the oncoming lane of a two-way road, pull over to the right and stop. Wait until it passes.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 35. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
