A car is coming toward you in your lane. What should you do?
The rule
If a vehicle is coming at you head-on in your lane, slow down, move to the right and sound your horn. Don't swerve into the left lane: the other driver may recover and pull back into it.
If a vehicle heads toward you in your lane, slow down, move right and honk to warn the driver. Don't turn into the left lane; they may recover into it.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 65. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
