The rule

If anyone is hurt or killed in a crash, the police must be told right away, and you should make sure an ambulance or rescue crew has been called.

If anyone is injured or killed in a crash, notify the police immediately and make sure an ambulance or rescue crew has been called. A DMV report is also due within 10 days.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 77. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
