Practice question · Safety and the law

You're in a crash with $1,500 in damage to one person's car. When must you report it to the DMV?

The rule

You must file a Report of Motor Vehicle Crash (MV-104) with the DMV within 10 days for any crash with a death, an injury, or $1,000 or more of damage to one person's property. Failing to report is a misdemeanor.

File a Report of Motor Vehicle Crash (MV-104) with the DMV within 10 days if anyone is hurt or killed, or if one person's property has $1,000 or more in damage.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 77. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
