Practice question · Safety and the law

Your car stalls on railroad tracks. What is the first step the manual lists?

The rule

If your vehicle stalls on railroad tracks, get everyone out and away from the tracks even if you don't see a train, then call the number on the Emergency Notification System sign. If a train is coming, run in its direction, angling 45 degrees off the tracks.

If you stall on the tracks, get everyone out and away from the tracks, even with no train in sight. Then call the number on the Emergency Notification System sign.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 61. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
