Your car stalls on the tracks and a train is coming. Which way should you run?
The rule
If you stall on railroad tracks with a train coming, get everyone out at once and run away at a 45-degree angle toward the direction the train is coming from, then call 911. With no train coming, try to restart or push off, or call the emergency number posted at the crossing.
Get everyone out at once and run away from the tracks at a 45-degree angle, toward where the train is coming from. Call 911 when you're safe.
From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 125. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
