Your 14-year-old passenger isn't wearing a seat belt. Who can be fined $25?
The rule
Everyone in a passenger vehicle must wear a seat belt or ride in a child restraint. An unbelted driver, or a passenger 16 or older, can be fined $25, and the driver $25 for each unbelted passenger aged 12 to 15. Fines come only with a stop for another violation.
Everyone must buckle up. You, the driver, can be fined $25 for each passenger aged 12 to 15 who isn't wearing a seat belt.
From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 35. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
