Practice question · Safety and the law

Your passenger is not wearing a seat belt. When is it your job, as the driver, to make sure they buckle up?

The rule

Every person in the car, driver and passengers, front seat and back, must buckle a safety belt. A driver carrying anyone under 18 must make sure that passenger is secured in a belt, booster or child seat, wherever they sit.

Everyone in the car must wear a safety belt. For a passenger under 18, the driver must make sure they are properly secured.

From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 4, page 26. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
