With a learner's permit, who may sit with you while you drive?
The rule
With a learner's permit, you may drive only with a licensed driver at least 21 in the front passenger seat. The supervisor may be 18, 19 or 20 if they are your legal guardian or your brother or sister (including half- and step-siblings).
A learner's permit lets you drive with a licensed driver at least 21 years old in the front passenger seat, alert and able to help.
From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 6, page 31. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
