With a steering wheel air bag, what is the least distance you should sit from the wheel?
The rule
With an air bag, move your seat back so at least ten inches separate you and the steering wheel, and tilt an adjustable wheel downward so the air bag points at your chest.
Move your seat back so at least ten inches separate you and the wheel. That gives the air bag room to cushion you.
From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 4, page 27. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
