At dusk, a deer jumps onto the road just ahead. You can't avoid it. What should you do?
The rule
Be alert for deer at dawn and dusk, most of all in the fall; they travel in groups. Use the horn to scare an animal away. If hitting one can't be avoided, don't swerve: brake firmly and keep to your lane until you stop under control.
If a crash with a deer can't be avoided, don't swerve: brake firmly and keep to your lane until you stop under control.
From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 3, page 25. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
