Practice question · Safety and the law

At 17 you're convicted of a demerit-point traffic violation. What will DMV require?

The rule

A conviction for a demerit-point violation (or a safety belt or child restraint violation) committed before 18 means a driver improvement clinic; miss the 90-day deadline and your license is suspended. A second such conviction means a 90-day suspension.

If you're convicted of a demerit-point violation committed under 18, DMV requires a driver improvement clinic. Not finishing it within 90 days means a suspension.

From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 5, page 29. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
