While you wait to turn left, which way should your front wheels point?
The rule
While waiting to turn left, keep your wheels pointed straight ahead until it's safe to start the turn; if you're hit from behind with your wheels turned left, you could be pushed into oncoming traffic.
Keep your wheels straight while you wait. If a car hits you from behind while your wheels point left, you could be pushed into oncoming traffic.
From the California Driver Handbook, section 6, page 19. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
