What does a broken yellow center line next to your lane mean?
The rule
On a two-lane road, you may pass when the broken yellow line is on your side and it's safe; if the solid yellow line is on your side, don't pass.
A broken yellow line next to your lane means you may pass, but only when it's safe.
From the California Driver Handbook, section 6, page 13. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
