What does a broken yellow center line next to your lane mean?
The rule
With one solid and one broken yellow center line, the line nearer you decides: solid on your side means you may not cross; broken on your side means you may cross to pass when it's safe.
A broken yellow line next to your lane means you may pass, but only when it's safe.
From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 90. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
