When may you drive in a bicycle lane?

The rule

Bicycle lanes are about five feet wide and marked by solid white lines. Drive in one only when turning on or off the road, look carefully for bicyclists before crossing it, and never park in it.

Motor vehicles may drive in a bicycle lane only when turning on or off the road. Look carefully for bicyclists before you cross it.

From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 91. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
